I can't figure this out. A few days ago noticed iChat and Mail were not making any sounds when they were supposed to. I double-checked the settings a few times and everything was right, sound events were suppose to take place. I restarted and it resolved the problem.

Now, a few days later, I'm having the same problem ???

Maybe something in the preference pane?

the only way i was able to solve it was to restart the system (not apps). Trust me, i tried every thing. I think its a bug in Tiger which they haven't fixed yet (it still happens in 10.4.5). Let's hope 10.4.6 fixes this.

Yea let's hope because I haven't had this yet since using Tiger. Restarting solved it the problem before so I guess that's what I'll have to do.

CrazyDreaming - have you lost your other sound effects too? Such as screenshot, emptying trash, etc? Every few days i lose all these sound effects (except for volume up/down), and the only solution i've found is a restart.

i've seen a couple people with the same problem that we have... we need to unite and write mr. jobs a letter!

or maybe a software update will help us, or some smart MF users...

I've intermittently had no sound in iChat, ever since the 10.4.4 update. Sometimes I get it working for a while, and then it goes again. Sometimes I can get speech sounds to work when the alert sounds aren't working. I hadn't really noticed, but checking them now trash doesn't make the empty trash sound, and mail doesn't make the new mail sound. iChat I really notice because now I have to be on the lookout for the bouncing icon to tell when people send messages.
All sound still works for iTunes, Quicktime, MSN messenger, iCal alarms (when you set it to message with sound).
I tried repairing permissions, deleting preferences but it hasn't helped at all. I don't really want to have to restart all the time just to get iChat working. At least now I know I'm not the only person with this issue.

Seems to be a Leopard bug

I am also having the same issue with my Macbook Pro and Leopard.

iChat loses sound along with trash and other things.

The only solution is to restart the OS.

I am hoping Snow Leopard has it fixed.

Maybe you should check to see if your hard drive is fitted well. You shouldn't be hearing anything "loose" in your machine. ;) :D
