Losing Sync content on reconnection

I just had to reconnect my Itune Library due to the fact that my ATV would not recognize newly added content. As I expected when I did this all my items (12650 photos ) that had been synced were lost! To say that I am not happy would be a under statement. What I'm asking; is there away to avoid this dilemma in case I have to do this again in the future. I now have had to do this twice in the past two months. All for the same reason; My ATV wouldn't recognize newly added movies! Disconnect and reconnect ( when you have to add the 5 digit number in Itunes); bingo they mysteriously show up!!!
