Okay, So i've found an older thread mentioning that the user looses volume control when the headphones are plugged into the macbook.
I'm having the exact opposite problem. When headphones are plugged in my volume control keys (F10 to F12) work as they should. But when I unplug the headphones these keys don't function at all. Although, when tapping the keys the onscreen volume control thing appears, and the little white boxes move left and right as they should...but the volume doesn't change.
Aside from that, My volume bar on the top menu bar works, and the volume control in the system preferences works too. Now the last time this occured, I quickly plugged the headphones in and out, and my volume control returned.
This time, it hasn't come back.
It's a Macbook Pro 8,1. 13" screen. Bought it last september. Runs on Max OS X: 10.6.7
What could be the problem? I've tried different applications, different headphones, to see it it was an external hardware problem, or simply firefox/safari being buggy. The problem remains constant throughout.
