Loss of external display signal when plugging in power? 2017 15" MBP

The machine: 2017 15" MBP, 2.9, 560
Situation: I have my external monitor plugged in, everything is working fine. All of a sudden, when plugging in power to another USB-C port, I will LOSE signal to my external monitor. The only way to obtain external display functionality again is to disconnect and reconnect it.

Anyone have an idea as to what might be happening?
