Hi everyone.
Im planning on buying a NAS and connecting it directly to my Mac Mini until I can afford to install a gigabit ethernet network on my house. This setup would be temporarily.
I have been reading about this setup and its possible to attach a NAS directly to the Mac Mini through ethernet. The problem seems to be that by doing so maybe I would lose all access to the internet on the Mac Mini.
Heres what Synology told me about this:
If you want to proceed with direct connection of the DiskStation to your Mac you will need to set up your Mac where it has a IP address of 169.254.x.x, with the DiskStation to have a similar IP within the same range as your Mac. Note, if you have one Ethernet port on your Mac you will disable your Macs ability of accessing regular network resources (such as browsing the web) until you return the Mac (and the DiskStation) to the default configuration.
I then asked him if I could access the web via wifi while the NAS would be connected via ethernet and they told me this:
If you have multiple network connections (Wired, wireless, or other wired connections) on your computer, then you may elect to use one of the other connections to access the Internet. For clarification, the network connection that is directly connected with the DiskStation, that particular network connection will not be able to access other network resources as that particular port has been configured to work with the DiskStation only.
So, just to be sure I ask all of you to see if someone knows or has tried this kind of setup. Will I be able to access the internet from the Mac Mini using my WIFI and have the NAS connected through ethernet?
Thanks everyone!
