Lost all contacts after 2.0.2 update, are they backed up?

I just updated to 2.0.2 from 1.1.4 itunes backed up the iphone, and all the music photos texts etc are back on the phone, my contacts are empty. Itunes did say it was backing up the contacts, but where would they store them. I looked in the address book and there are not there.
Any help would be appreciated

Unfortunately I learned the hard way after having the phone for 2 months.
A)You have to had set it to backup/store contacts to Windows Address book, outlook, etc. for you to have an accesible phonebook that you can view on comp and/or put into phone.
B)Otherwise you have to try to restore the phone from a backup, assuming you have allowed the phone to save backup files every now and then.
