Lost all desktop icons when I upgraded to 10.3.5

After I upgraded from 10.3.3 to 3.5 I lost all my icons on the desk and now can't access any of my applications. I click on Finder in the "dock" but says nothing but "finder not running". I am really stumped, Thanks for any help.
