Lost bookmarks

I did something stooopid and lost a level of bookmarks. How might I have done that? It was all of a small folder of about 12 or 15 entries.

I'm sure I'll mess up again. Is there a way to save bookmarks to a file from which I can restore or at least view?

You can "Export a bookmarks file" - “Safari Bookmarks.html”

or you can backup the file ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
