Lost contacts with iPhone 3GS

I just purchased a 3GS, had the sales weasel transfer all my old contacts successfully, and then synced with iTunes. All contacts now gone. I am running v. 3.1.2.

I have the old phone with sim card, so that's solvable, but will the same thing just happen again when I sync?
