I needed to reinstall OS X (Yosemite) and migrate my user from a backup. Everything went smoothly, except for the messages in the Messages app. All the messages threads are there in the sense that the contacts to/from whom the messages were exchanged appear, but all the messages have empty content.
I went to ~/Library/Messages and all of the attachments are in the Attachments folder.
This isn't the absolute end of the world because I have another device logged in the same apple ID, but I'm curious about how one can recover from this, if indeed it is possible.
