Lost data on storage drive

Hi,
I am embarrassed to say that last night, after taking care of my grandbaby for several hours and half-asleep myself, I intended to pull out my power cord to move my MacBook, but by accident pulled out the storage drive firewire. Of course, the drive appears to have been erased. It won't even show up on my desktop anymore.

Is there any way I can fix this horrible mistake?

Does it show up in Disk Utility?

It did show up in Disk Utility but all of the options were grayed out when I highlighted it.

What is/was the drive formatted as? Mac OS Extended?
