Lost HD Space

I have deleted a virtual machine by dragging it to Trash. After emptying Trash Finder showed my free space increasing by the right amount (18 GB) but almost immediately reverted back to its previous availability. When I run view Finder or OmniDiskSweeper the total sum of all the files is about 18 GB less than the overall total should be suggesting there is a file/folder of that amount that I can't see even after I have set up Folder to display hidden files. Any suggestions? I've tried to restore back to a previous back up but get a 'not enough space' message. Any suggestions on what I should do?

I'm running Lion and regretting it...........

To find out, where you hard drive capacity is being used, you can use the following free applications:

• DiskInventory X
• OmniDiskSweeper
• JDisk Report
• GrandPerspective

Maybe try a combination of several, if you still can't find the "missing" capacity.
