I had upgraded my software to Leopard and after a year or so the HD crashed the week before Christmas.

I got a new HD installed and I loaded the Leopard software I had purchased. Today I noticed there is no iPhoto. It came basic when I bought the Mac in Dec 2008, I'm certain.

Do I have to buy the iLife to get iPhoto now? Wasn't it free at one time and came installed?

iLife comes installed on all new Macs, and installation discs are also provided in the box. You should have a disc called "Applications install DVD".

I don't believe iLife was what was originally installed in 2008. It was iPhoto.

Nevertheless I will look for the application disc you mentions.

iLife is the name for the suite of applications that are iPhoto, iDVD, Garage Band, iMovie and iWeb.

iLife's been coming preinstalled on Macs since 2003 I think, so with a 2008 Mac, you're definitely set.

You may be thinking of iWork. That's something you'd have to buy separately. :)
