lost memory in vm

i was hoping someone out there might be able to help me with my mac book pro, i have only had it 6 months and it has run out of memory and saying start up disk is full. but i can't account for all the memory but when i looked at the vm it is saying that it is using 150 gb which seems like an awful lot. does anyone know how i can get that memory back. and get my computer working again
