Lost most of calendar data--what did I do?

On my Iphone I added an item to the calendar (standard apple calendar app) under today's date and when I went back into the calendar 5 min later all my calendar events after 9/21/09 including the item I thought I had just entered were gone. This includes multiple repeating to dos extending into the future.

I can get the data back when I get home, but wanted to know what happened so I can avoid making the same mistake.
