Lost My Dog Yesterday

Yesterday, we had to put our dog down. He was 12.5 years old. He was a Christmas gift to my daughter in 1999. My entire family was there to say goodbye.

RIP Cocoa.

Who ever marked you post down OP clearly doesn't own a dog.

Sorry for your loss and its never nice to out an animal down, especially something as loyal as a dog.

Sorry to hear that. My first dog is 6, my second is 4, and I don't know what I'm going to do when that time comes...probably cease to function for a solid week.

I am not ashamed to say I would probably do that too. My dog is part of the family.

Same here. My parents never let me have pets growing up, so my yellow and black labs are like my kids, and the black lab is younger and relies on the older yellow for confidence so who knows what'll happen if my yellow goes first. I dread the day I'll have to put either of them down and hope they live long enough to die in their bed overnight without any pain. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I know what you are going through as I had to put down my dog (she was 15 years old) in 1989 and I STILL miss her very much.

IMO, down voting a post like this is agreeing with the OP that putting down his dog is bad thing.

I love dogs, and have to say how sorry I am to learn of your loss.

It must be heart-breaking to have to do such a thing, and what a lovely looking dog. Clearly, a well looked after and much loved member of the family.

Thanks everybody. It was incredibly hard to do, but he was having a real difficult time breathing. His sides would just look like bellows heaving in and out. Our vet and an internal medicine specialist said that he only had a short time left and that he would not have an easy death. Basically, he would slowly suffocate. So we made the choice to give him an easier death.

Take your time grieving, then jump right back on that horse. :D

My son, who is 11, said a couple of interesting things yesterday.

First, he said, "I have never not had a dog." We got Cocoa in December 1999 as a gift for his older sister. My son was born in July 2000. Got the rest of the family crying again when he said that.

Later that day he said, "I know what I want for my birthday." We all had a good laugh over that.

Hope he's hanging in there. I don't know how I'd handle it, whether I'd go out and get another dog right away, or let myself grieve. I can't imagine having just one or no dogs at this point.

I'm so sorry to hear that. What an amazingly gorgeous dog. There's nothing else in the world like the unconditional love of an animal, especially a dog. We have an 8 year old yellow lab who has some health issues and I just can't imagine what it will be like when she goes. She truly is part of the family. I'm not sure what your religious views are but you may believe that she is in a better place now and that is always a reassuring thought. Best wishes to you and your family. I'm so sorry and hope that things get better soon. -Michael

That dog definitely looks the best. Sorry to hear. We have a 2yr old dog that's literally like our child. Sleeps with us every night!

I'm so sorry to hear that :(

We had to put my dog down in 2011 and it was one of the hardest things to do. People say pets are like a member of the family. I disagree, there's no "like". My dog was a member of the family.

That is about right, In fact it took a good year to get over it for me. I don't think you can rush into getting another pet so soon after. My average has seemed to be 3 year spans in between.
