Silly newbie mistake. After finishing with a zip file I deleted it.

I opened my downloads directory (stack displayed as fan), dragged the zip file to the Trash and released. Satisfying click. Moved back to the downloads icon and ... it's gone. And all the downloads it contained. My first thought was to recover it from Trash but it wasn't there.

I assume that I need to drag the file to be discarded from the stack to the desktop AND THEN drag it again to the Trash.

So how do I get my download directory and it's contents back?

Thanks

In Finder, open the Go menu and choose Home. See whether the Downloads directory is in there. If it is, then you can drag it back to the Dock.

What you actually need to do is click the stack to open the fan, then drag the icon from the fan to the Trash. If you drag the stack itself, then you'll remove the stack from the Dock.

The Dock is only a place holder for files, folders and mostly applications.
Removing something from the Dock doesn't mean it is actually deleted, just the shortcut to whatever it was pointing to.

Open a Finder window, select your home folder, then select the Downloads folder.

Home folder is the circled one.

Downloads folder is the one named Downloads.

A good way to start:

You probably just removed it from your Dock. You can drag it from:
Macintosh HD > Users > username > Downloads
to your Dock.
