so i lost my iphone 3G. can i walk into apple and buy another one (paying full price of course) even though i am not eligible for an upgrade from AT&T?

(i have a $600 Apple gift card so i'd really like to buy it from Apple)

lol apple gift card = cash inside an apple store.

seriously though i really want to know before i drive out to the apple store. has anyone done this?

When did they lift the cash only requirement?
They changed that back during the days of the original iPhone.

If you only have cash and want to buy an iPhone, you'll first have to go to the register and buy a gift card.

To the OP, yes, you can buy another iPhone from Apple, but it'll be at the regular unsubsidized price. $399/$499

Perfect thats exactly what i was looking for. Thanks.

i will buy one today since i need one urgently and then return it and eat the restocking fee if they release the 32GB at macworld

No you have to pay full price for a new one. If you didn't, people would just "lose" them all the time.

Thats correct i am no longer eligible for that price, probably until the third gen iphone comes out next year.

u can use any payment option for the iPhone. I used $100 gifcards on my iPhone, which I paid full price...

I believe you have to have cash.

I bought my iphone 3G with a gift card.

I tried to buy my iPhone with cash and the Apple employee made me convert it into a gift card before they would sell it to me. Said they don't accept cash for an iPhone purchase. Said it was store policy.

Must have something to do with if you return it. That way if you do, they only have to give you a gift card back = Guaranteed Sale for Apple.

I would call your local Apple Store and ask before driving down. They should give you a straight answer.

if you bought your iphone with american express and it hasnt been 90 days since purchase you can call them up report it as lost and theyll give you the money to replace it for free, they did it for me! :):)

i called, but for my type of card there is no insurance...seems like a good idea now... :(

I bought a 16gb iphone for $499 with my gift card. no problems. for those that are still wondering

FYI you still have to sign a new 2 year agreement even if you're paying full price.

i dont think this is true.
recently, my g/f dropped her iphone into water. she went out and paid the $499 plus tax and picked up a new white 16gb model.
no contract was signed.

If you were made to sign a new 2 year agreement, I would have demanded the subsidized price - that just seems fair.

not true, they wanted me to sign a new contract aswell

they consider loss/theft iphones different than water damaged ( where you just pay unsubsidized)
