If its an external HD, shut off the HD and then turn it back on. If its internal, go try going to Disk Utility and then see if the partitions show up on the left hand side. They may be grayed out. Click ONCE on them to select it and then above click on the button that represents Mount. They should now reappear on the desktop.
If not, then simply restart and they should be there.
