After importing some photos into iPhoto I, for some reason I can't remember, dragged one of the photos to my desktop. That seems to be a bad thing to do. As a result much of my library was lost. I tried rebuiding with RescueTime to no avail. I tried going to the log in Disk Utility to see if they were visible. They are gone. Is there any hope?

Dragging photos from iPhoto to the desktop is perfectly fine, it doesn't hurt anything. Somewhere along the line your iPhoto library got displaced, check your pictures folder in the Finder first, if nothing then go into Spotlight and type "iPhoto library".
Are you in the Admin account?

Also are you using Time Machine, if so it your iPhoto library would be backed up provided that you allowed for it to be.
