Lost Photos

Hello everyone!

I replaced a damaged screen on my iPhone 4 and when it rebooted all my photos had disappeared. I stupidly had not created a backup before starting. In the usage part of the settings there is still 1.2GB allocated to the camera roll but it is appearing empty. I'm just wondering if there is any way of retrieving the photos or if I should just give up?
