Lost sound effects

Somehow I randomly lost sound effects. I have external speakers plugged into the headphone type jack on the Mac mini. Sound in iTunes, youtube, VLC, etc all work. No sound effects when connecting to VPN (used to find), sending mail, etc.

Anyone know what the issue might be?

Only thing I can think of is the Alert volume is really low (or muted) or that Play Sound Effects through ________ is on the wrong setting. Both setting are in System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects

Thank you this helped. What the fix was is that the output was sent to a monitor (no speakers) instead of the headphone jack. Have no clue how this got changed but your post helped
