lost user password for mac.

I put my mac mini away a couple years ago, and i decided to bring it back out to use and i can't remember the password on it. any idea how to reset it? or any way to format without the password?

Yes, with the installation disc.

i put the installation disc in to reformat, but it still asked me for the password.

hold down the "C" key when booting up to boot from the cd/dvd

I just put the disc in, and when i clicked restart, it asked me for my password. is there any way around this? I am using a windows bluetooth keyboard so I can't hold down command + s and do it manually that way.
When the password dialogue came up, I opened the details and chose the 'mac OSx installation disc 1" and my computer shut off and started flashing black and white.. fixable? hopefully.

i ran into a bigger problem after the computer shut down, its hooked up to our tv, and is just flashing from black to white,when its turned on and still has the installation cd inside of it.

You don't need the installation disc to reset the password.

If the disc is stuck, hold eject while it's starting up. Or, there should be a little pin hole eject button.
