Lost with jailbreaks

Alright, I've been in the Ipod/Iphone world for quite a long time already. Once i got my Iphone 3gs (New boot) and jailbreaked it (3.1.3...yes that's a long time ago) I dont bother keeping up with new updates and stuff.

With this said, i came to realise that my jailbreak is very, very old. I would like to update it to at least firmware 4.0 but i dont know where to start and would definately not want to risk to not be able to re-jailberak afterward....

SO

Is there a way I can update my jailbreak without restoring my iphone?
If not, what's the best/easiest way to get to IOS 4.0 untethered from where i am now?

In order to jailbreak on any iOS you have to update your iPhone.

Open up Cydia on your iPhone and at the top of the screen should say "SHSH: iOS x.x.x, ....."

List which iOS ones you have saved.

Okay good. Now do you require the unlock as well? Or just jailbreak?

You have a lot options/difficulties when it comes to upgrading your iPhone to jailbreak. Many factors come into play.


If you don't need the unlock and want to upgrade to 4.0/4.0.1/4.1 you have to edit your host files to that of the Cydia server. Then you can update and jailbreak with LimeRa1n.

If you want to preserve the baseband and you have a Mac, you can use PwnageTool to upgrade to 4.0/4.0.1/4.1
 
Okay, well i dont need the unlock so i guess im gonna "edit host files"

How do i do that?
 
So if I understand well....

1. Edit hosts files
2. Download the IOS 4.0 Firmware
3. Restore my ipod to IOS 4.0 with Itunes
4. Use Limera1n to jailbreak

Right?
 
One problem:

I cant right click on notepad and run it as administrator...
Althouth I'm the only one using this laptop..

Anyway, i found out how to do it

I am now runnning 3gs 4.0 jailbroken.

Btw, can i run facetime on this? Or do i need 4.1?

Unlock? i did not know ipods were unlockable. :eek:
I better do some research.

Yes. There's an app in Cydia called MiTime ($5.99)
 
I guess it doesnt....

If i ever wanted to upgrade to 4.1, I follow the same steps then use Limara1n?
