Lots of text at start-up and shutdown

Hi
I'm just setting up a Mac Mini for a friend and on power-on/start-up and also on shutdown I'm getting white text on a black screen which is obviously some kind of start-up log. I've had a fair few macs but have never seen this and certainly wouldn't expect it 'out of the box'.

What exactly is it and how do I stop it from happening ever?

It's verbose boot, and is useful to diagnose startup issues.

Enter this into to Terminal:

sudo nvram boot-args=
