I was pretty skeptical about the usefulness of AppleWatch at first. I’d given up on watches since the early 90’s. With my desk-bound computer industry job, I type all day and I’ve always been more comfortable without a watch. Besides, I figured that, since I have the iPhone with me, the watch can’t give me any info I don’t already have.

My Gen III watch was pretty nice, but it was stolen and I used the insurance money to get a stainless Gen 4. Last summer, I bought my girlfriend a Gen 6 watch. She’s usually very anti-techno gadgets, but she loves hers as well and wears it always.

First discovery: With the standard bands, you can barely feel the AppleWatch at all. That’s huge.

In my work these days, pre-Covid at least, I travel overseas very often. My watch continually displays both Local and Pacific Time, so I know when it’s safe to text my kids good morning and good night.

The exercise tracking is great. It works very well and it’s very useful, especially the pulse indications. I like that a lot.

As an amateur photographer, I want to know sunrise and sunset times in very specific ways: I want to know when the sun will BEGIN to touch the horizon at dawn, not when it’s fully up at sunrise. By swiping to the Solar Dial face, I can see exactly what time I need to set up by.

The AppleWatch unlocks my laptop and, if I’m wearing a mask, it helps me unlock my phone. It vibrates when I get a call or text message.

All I can say is, if you’re on the fence about it, I think it’s fabulous. It’s very useful, and much better than expected.
