iPhone 12 Loving the iPhone 12! (Coming from XS Max)

I was mostly happy with my XS Max but when I played with a 6.1 inch iPhone I realized it was still big enough to be comfortable to read and work with but smaller enough that maybe it wouldn't feel like a brick in my pocket.

With that in mind, I decided to go for the iPhone 12 in blue and 256GB. I love the glossy back and the deep blue color. I also decided I didn't need the zoom in camera and LiDAR. I am sure they're nice features but for me it wasn't worth the extra money.

Anyway, I gotta say I am super happy with the iPhone 12. The battery seems to last as long or maybe longer than my XS Max. I love the color, and the feel of it in general. I love that my pocket isn't weighed down anymore also.

To anyone who has a "Max" phone of a prior generation and doesn't want to blow as much cash, do consider the regular 12. It won't be as huge of a step down as you may think to get the smaller screen.

As for the cameras, the 12 blows away the XS Max. I find the "zoom out" (0.5x) camera more useful than the zoom in anyway. There are a lot more scenarios where I am in close quarters with people than needing to zoom in. So trading a zoom in for a zoom out function works out for me.

Night mode is amazing, and portrait mode is also better than ever. I have to say this is a terrific phone and I hope it will serve me for the next year or maybe two (like my XS Max did).

I can see how someone who has an 11 or 11 Pro may not see huge improvements in speed or camera quality, but coming from an XS Max it does feel quite significant (especially the addition of Night Mode which the 11 has already, but the XS Max did not).

Can't wait for more MagSafe accessories. I did enjoy having an official Apple battery case for my XS Max when I would go on trips. It added bulk but took the anxiety out of charging when I knew I couldn't top off for a day. I hope the 12 ends up having a battery case also or a stick on MagSafe battery like the way some artist imagined. That would be great!

Nice post 👍🏻

I may be in a similar position next year/year after as I’ve just upgraded to the 12 Pro Max. Although I love it and its features, the size & weight are something I’ll learn to accommodate instead of completely getting used to and finding perfect.

In a weird way, I can think of those drawbacks as positives later down the line, as any future (smaller) iPhone I upgrade to will feel so much lighter, even less cumbersome and way more pocketable.

I totally agree on most things. I would just have loved a little bit of extra battery life. But the 12 is an amazing phone in the new lineup! :)

I came down from the plus sized phones including the 12 pro max. I love my 12 pro. Screen is plenty big enough. Battery life is sufficient for me. Just love the lightness and portability.

I think the battery life coming from the XS Max is actually fairly comparable. Maybe because my XS Max was 2 years old so a bit worn, and the battery here is fresh. But with fast charging available, if I top it off for 30 minutes during the afternoon while I eat lunch I am fairly confident I won't run out of juice later.

I also compared the 12 to the 11 side by side and the 11 does seem bulkier even from a distance, so yeah, I think Apple nailed it with the form factor on this. Maybe next year or the year after I will consider the "Pro" model, maybe if they have a good color also. I feel the glossy blue of the 12 looks better than the "Pacific Blue" of the 12 Pro to me.

I know it's kind of a weird thing to hinge a decision on but I had the gold XS Max, and while I loved the rim of the phone which matched my gold Apple Watch, I always felt a bit weird having a "pink" phone and spent my entire time covering it up with cases. It's so nice to just be able to use a thin transparent case now and enjoy the natural beauty of the phone. I want to keep it that way for a while.

Am in the same situation like you had. I had the xs max for two years and now got the 12 pro max. I could not try the phone in store due to covid. I now hate my 12 pro max way to bulky at work in my pockets and mostly heavy . When i go on a atv ride i just hate the size it takes so i might try the mini. So far are you still happy? For sure i will miss the battery size and cameras..

The 12 is a great allrounder which strikes a good balance between display size, weight and portability. Very happy with mine.

Loved my blue 12 also 💙 thought my eyes could adapt to a smaller screen, upgraded from a xs max, unfortunately I’ve gotten use to bigger screen phones, found the screen a bit to small for my liking, loved the color, weight, size, in the end I knew I needed a wider and larger display, ended up returning the little beast 😔 for a 12 pro max

It’s not for me,currently owning XS Max but I will only upgrade to Pro Max,the regular 12 not only inferior screen and camera wise but also it’s design looks budget compared to Pro.

Yes, I am still happy with my choice for the iPhone 12.

Occasionally when I go into a store with iPhones on display, I play with the Pro Max and it just feels massive now (even though its only slightly larger than the XS Max).

I think I will stick to the iPhone 12 or at least that size. I am considering getting a pro model next time but for now I think I am okay.
