Well what are people doing and how has it affected battery life ? I would think it would extend the battery I left off but some have said otherwise.

You might think so but if there is no LTE available, it will not use that mode. SO it really does not matter. I am on constant LTE and getting excellent battery use so far. Slightly better than my 4S
 
I'd turn it off, since the phone will keep trying to ping the LTE towers to get a signal lock and there are no towers to get an answer.

LTE is more power hungry then 3G and if you can't use it, there's no reason to keep it on.
 
I only have seen LTE in 2 areas that I live near, but I still keep LTE on anyway. No problems at all with battery life. This is what I'm seeing with only the second charge.
