Today I decided to give my LTE Apple Watch a true test of the battery and new features of Watch OS beta 4.1.
Test:
1. What would the battery life be after an hour workout?
2. Can I stay connected with work (I'm on call 24/7 with my job)
3. How wil it Apple Radio streaming over AW LTE
4. Would it feel awkward not having my phone
Apple Watch LTE / Watch OS 4.1 beta - Verizon : Charge 100%
Apple AirPod : Charge 100%
iPhone 7Plus (waiting on X) : Off and in car glove box
I left or the gym with 100% charge, with the gym (LA Fitness) only being 5min away all devices still had a full charge. With my iPhone fully powered off I headed inside the gym; using the LA Fitness Watch app I scanned myself in. Time to workout, I selected the AW Workout app and preset Strength workout (I have consistent HR monitor turned on)... Next I switch to the new AW beta Radio app, being that I am a Spotify user my only live streaming music choice was Beats 1. Unfortunately all other radio stations require an Apple Music membership.
At the end of my workout 1hr 15min...
Apple Watch was at 76% , AirPods 68% ... I was able to stay connected, which is a nice plus; Music stream was decent, i would give it a 2 1/2 out of 5. The airpods do not give the best over all sound quality and i'm sure that Apple Music is streaming at a fairly low bitrate. Not having my phone, was not as bad as I thought it would be. I was a lot more focused with my workout... no thoughts of checking emails, or social apps between sets. if work needed me the could Skype or call me, and I was able to listen to music (although I would prefer spotify). Over all very pleased, this will be perfect for when I run on the weekends, not having to carry my iPhone Plus or worry about dropping it.
Is it worth the extra $50 for the LTE and $10 a month for service (Verizon gives 3mons free) I would say yes. I workout daily and do other activities (flying drones or boosted boarding) that require full use of my phone or would prefer to put it away.
I did do a LTE 1hr 30min call test separated from 100%...only problem was the watch started getting very warm and i can see that leaving skin marks if you consistently make long calls.
(wrote this really quick in between meetings, sorry for any typos)
