Anyone seen any consistent success getting the iPhone they want during the 6pm - 7pm local times walk-in purchase period, when the Apple Store will sell reserves that weren't picked up to anyone who wants them?

My wife manages ops for a large department store, and she says reports on daily holds from her unit supervisors come out about 50/50, even for the hottest, hardest to find items -- though she also says that can vary wildly from day to day, depending on which way the wind is blowing or something. Her opinion was that anything that is not already paid for, there is typically a fair chance someone not bother picking it up. But she also said, according to the laws of retail, you will always go on days everyone picked up their reserves at that store for the model you want.

But does anyone have firsthand experience with this with the iPhone 4S at an Apple Store? The picture my wife paints is rather grim, amounting to: They'll have some reserves that don't get picked up, but unless you cover yourself with biohazard warnings and start vomiting the minute you walk in the store at 5:59pm, you won't get one; and then you always run the risk a few people brought biohazard protection suits.
