I just noticed that my ~2 yr unibody macbook pro adapter is starting to fray at the magnetic end. I have read a few reports of fires and burns and I am getting concerned. Apple tends not be very generous when it comes to repairs/refunds, but on the website they said you can bring your adapter in and possible get a new adapter. At this point there are no burn marks, just fraying.

Has anyone had any luck getting a new adapter? Is it a waste of time to go to the apple store and try and get a replacement?

You can buy the old style Magsafe adapter from Amazon for around $25.

Do you have AppleCare ? I've been able to swap out MagSafes , headphones, sync cables, airports etc with relative ease.....
As long as you've got AAPLcare.

No apple care, anyone have luck without it?

You should just go to an Apple store and try your luck. Mine wasn't burned but was fairly frayed (enough that I could see all the tiny wire things inside) and they replaced it with the new magsafe adapter. I didn't have Applecare but I did have to refer them to the thing on the website about the adapters.
