lync overrules system volume controls

I have this weird issue... Lync messages keeps playing their notification sound even though the system volume is turned completely down.

Now i've turned off notifications in lync and that seems to do the trick. But i still wonder how lync can overrule the systems settings for sound. Any ideas?
