I normally order from att premier and they have always come with a SIM card, but this time ordered from Apple. The phone came yesterday with no SIM card in it. I had to take it to ATT to get one since my 4s does not have a micro sim to swap.

ATT said they had never seen that before and that the only phones shipped without a SIM are unlocked phones.

Did apple send me an unlocked GSM phone or is this normal for them to come without a SIM card?

I've never had a SIM card with my iPhone 5 from AT&T. The card tray is empty and I've used it for a year.

Not normal. Should always come with a SIM, since you're supposed to turn on the phone, activate it, and it deactivates your old phone's SIM automatically. You did the right thing going to the store.

To check if your phone is unlocked, go to iphoneimei.info, if you like.
