yes, I have the same issue. doesn't matter if I plug in the firewire cable after lion is already booted up or if its plugged in during the boot up; it gives me the grey screen.
 
You should never upgrade your OS if you rely on an audio interface. It usually takes weeks or even months before M-Audio / Protools catches up with the changes made in OS X. If you need to use the interface I'd recommend reinstalling 10.6 and wait for news from M-Audio that there is a patch.

Yep. I have an Eleven Rack and initially the sound didn't work after upgrading to Lion. A driver reinstall fixed that, but ProTools won't run under Lion at this point.

yep, very true. I have a disk image before I made any changes. :)

I did find a driver update in the M-Audio forums on their website. It seems to be working now. This is for the firewire solo...
