Edit: it would be nice if someone could help, this is getting pretty annoying to stop this process every time before shutdown

I have an M-audio (oxygen 8, older model) midi surface that i use with garage band through usb , it works fine, but the problem is that it makes shutdown longer than it takes to shutdown my windows pc (that's saying something). the only way i have figured out to stop it is manually through activity monitor (a process called "maudio firmware")
my question is, is there any way to change the start up plug ins so it only runs when i need it to run?

I don't think this will help any, but my laptop model is:
Macbook 13 inch white 2.1 ghz, 2 gb of ram, 320 gb hdd, running os x 10.5.7
