Here's a question for M1 iMac fans- do you still find yourself appreciating all the different colours?

TBH, whenever I walk past the Apple store, I still go in for a minute just to look at the iMacs, even after 2 years.

I do own a pink one, but now I'm starting to like the Silver the most. I really hated silver at launch, as it was a continuation of the boring colour we'd had for 14 years. But now, with some space between, I now think the Silver looks the most timeless, and the most aesthetic. Apple seems to agree- they included it in their 'complete Apple lineup' image in the WWDC Keynote. When first introduced, the Blue model was the 'flagship' display one.

I never liked any of the colors much, but most of that is because of the white/light gray bezels. I'd never get a display/iMac with light bezels for myself ever again (long story I won't get into here). I did get the Blue for my parents and it grew on me a little. I probably would have got them the silver as yes it does look timeless, but my mom wanted something different.

Hope they at least offer one configuration with black bezels next update. I do think they will mute down the pastel colors either way.

My 1st Mac was a 2000 iMac G3 DV SE graphite. If I were to buy a M1 today it would likely be silver as it's the most neutral.

Although I'd accept any color if it came in a 27" 5K or 32" or 6K variant. :)

I absolutely love the iMac colors. I sold my blue iMac when I bought a MacBook Air, but I kind of regret it.

I’m weird on the color thing. For the laptops, I will only buy silver, unless I’m forced to buy some other color because Apple refuses to make silver. I think the silver MacBook is the best look.

With the iMac I like how the color looks. The only disappointment I have is most desks are against a wall. The best looking and most colorful part of the iMac is the back. I’m really glad they went with the white bezels because at least that adds some non boring look to it.

If they came out with an M2 iMac in the same colors, I would be very tempted to buy it… Apple please don’t do that because I really don’t need one 🤦‍♂️🤣

I like that there are colors, but personally would probably only consider blue or green, and maybe purple.

By the way, wouldn't it be cool if they had been named grape, tangerine, strawberry and lime instead of purple, orange, red and green? Would have been a nice nod to the olden days.

I bought a Purple CTO iMac when they came out. Besides liking Purple the best, I wanted to get either Purple, Yellow, or Orange because those colors are exclusive to the 8 core GPU, 4 USB port models and I thought it might hold its value better. Over two years later, I am starting to consider selling to move to a used M1 Max Mac Studio with larger display. Still a great machine though. Mine has 16GB ram, and 1TB SSD.

I think it would be cool if they changed the colors up with the next revision, like they did back in the G3 years. Personally I'd love if they did away with the two-tone look and did some really deep colors. The two-tone has grown on me, but I really would like to see it. Maybe do a Bondi Blue or blueberry style blue to harken back to the original iMac.

For myself it's Yellow all the way for current colors. Love the way that one looks. If I was buying a new iPhone or iPad 10th gen I'd get a yellow one too, I think they're great. Silver will always be the staple though.

Alternatively if they're going to avoid doing a larger iMac model, they should at least throw an M2 Pro in there with a Space Gray color option. That would allude to the old Graphite G3, the DV model with FireWire.

Interesting. I was originally only considering blue, green or purple too, but once I saw them in the Apple store, I felt that the back of all three was far too dark in most lighting conditions- the blue looks like black 99% of the time, it didn't stand out.
That's why I then started liking the ones that really 'pop'- Yellow, Orange, Pink. The yellow is really gold on the back, which I love, but yellow is not my colour. Orange also isn't quite me. So pink it was, since our apartment already has those colours anyway.
I guess I didn't seriously consider silver when buying.

Yeah, but Apple can't be that fun anymore, right...

Yes, definitely. Colour really does increase sales to suckers like me. Getting new colours every 2-3 years, even if just in the iMacs, would be awesome. How about a starlight iMac? Or rose gold even? Or that neutral sage, like the iMac G3. So many possibilities.

Yeah it's a shame. You really need to place it in some open-plan home to enjoy it most, but I can't do this, and I doubt many can at all without creating a cabling problem.
Still waiting to see more small businesses use one, but it hasn't really penetrated the market s much as I'd hoped- I still see way more Intel iMacs in offices/retail.

Fair enough. This might sound weird but I think the 2-port model looks a little nicer than the 4, just because it looks so, so clean. But I don't think I could really justify one when we now know it lacks the second fan.

Silver owner here. Still love it - the colour on the chin goes well with the bezels. I'd toyed with the idea of getting blue but I'm glad we got silver.
That's definitely what I've been thinking lately. The bezel after all isn't pure white, it's a light gray, so it does blend the best with silver.

I absolutely love the colours - I have since release and still do.

I got the yellow iMac on launch and have since been slowly converting my space into a yellow-themed wonderland... if Apple only released the M1 iMac in classic silver, I likely would have had a very boring space (meaning it would've been how it was while owning an iMac for the last 10 years pre-M1 iMac...). Thanks Apple!

For the first year or so I had my desk against my couch to show off the back, and so I would see it each time I walked into the room, however I added speakers and a DAC (plus occasional external SSD) and the wires started to annoy me... so it is against a wall/window now.

As for the promos, I think they've stuck with silver to make the whole Mac lineup coherent and clean. The blue at the beginning seemed to be to remind people that the new iMacs are now in colours (again), which is the main reason I upgraded... Apple's marketing really works on me!

I love the colors and wish they would come in a 27" size. The teal green is my favorite, followed closely by the blue. I was encouraged to hear from Joswiak's interview with Gruber that they still believe in the product and it's in their DNA.

So I expect an update this Fall.

What would be cool is if they used the adjustable stand that you can get with the Studio Display on a new 27" iMac, a throwback to the iMac G4.

I think we'll get an M2 iMac, sure, in the next 3-4 months. Probably no M2 Pro, just regular M2, as the iMac is meant to be, and that's fine.
An adjustable, G4-like stand would be awesome, but I think it would push the price up far too much for a consumer machine. People forget but the iMac G4 was significantly more expensive than the iMac G3 or G5, and didn't sell as well as either.

I learn something new every day!

I have purple and am happy with the color. I have it directly next to my Pro Display XDR, so the white bezel doesn’t quite work. But I understand and agree with why Apple chose white bezels. They look good as a standalone device in a normal home setting.

Not really. It started at $1299, the same as the iMac G3 DV+ models. The Superdrive model was more expensive at $1799. However, Apple still sold the G3 iMac at $799 and one of the ugliest Macs of all time, the eMac at $999.

I agree. I've always tried to make myself like it, but it's just odd. I'd rather see an actual proper polycarbonate G3 iMac shell than that thing. Weighed at least 15 pounds more than a G3 too, hated them.

They do make good cat beds though:

It's better than the G3 All in One, though.

Thank goodness the 1998 iMac G3 scuttled all the legacy I/O and floppies and went with USB-A, FW and Optical Drives.

Although I agree with Steve that the iMacs G3 would have been better off with a CD writer than a DVD-ROM drive then eventually a CD writer than can read DVDs.

First DVD writer/SuperDrive was in the 2002 PowerMac G4 QS.

Then again this was the competition of the AIO in the mid 90s.

Could they make the current form factor semi-translucent I wonder? If so, my desk would love a bondi blue.

I love that minty green color they did on the iMac and the iPad Air 4 but when I look at the iMac colors I continue to be struck by how ANNOYED I am that I can't just get all of my devices in the same color scheme.

That's definitely a me problem though, haha. Choice is good. I've been loving some of the colors Apple has been offering and I adore it when they have some more flamboyant options to go with the classic silver

Here we go:

  • New iMacs (codenamed J433 and J434) with 24-inch screens, like the current models. The company is also conducting early work on an iMac with a screen over 30 inches, I’m told.
