Ok here's my question. My teenager was using my m1 MBA which has 16GB. When she was adding some pack/mod she kept getting an error message that there wasn't enough memory available. I don't do Minecraft so I had no clue about the problem. I was quite surprised as I would have thought the m1 could handle that kinda stuff.

Is this common for that app?

I have a related question. Which is more important for handling multiple apps that Minecraft, Spotify, Youtube, etc... more memory (e.g., 16gb or 24 in m2 or m1 Pro in 14 MBP) and why?

thanks.

Minecraft does tend to be a bit of a RAM hog, especially with mods, but I’ve run quite large modpacks (~200 mods) with only 12GB on my windows laptop, so the MBA should be able to handle it. ASilicon does handle ram differently than x86, though, so I’m not sure.

How many mods was your daughter trying to run?

She crashed my m1 when she was using a pack with 350 mods... Does any Mac laptop handle that kinda stuff?

That’s an extremely large mod pack. I would try testing it with a more modest amount of mods (try about 150). Mind, Macs nave never been built for gaming.
Sounds like you're suggesting that in this case, it doesn't matter whether she's working on an M1 MBA, M2 MBA, or 14 Macbook Pro. Is that right?

Microsoft owns Minecraft. Minecraft was a business that Apple could have, and should, bought when it was available. It is a perfect introduction to youthful gaming. Those players often graduate to more intensive games in the future -- and it all would have been on the Apple platform. #MissedOpportunity

May I interrupt to say that if you're thinking of getting your daughter a MacBook Pro 14" to run Minecraft, you are definitely in "Dad of the Year" territory.
Thanks...:) Actually, she's in her high school senior year so this is the 18th B-day/graduation/it better last through college gift... In my view, I would take her playing Minecraft 1000 times over the trouble waiting for her at college parties...

Yes, that would give a lot of computers with modest specs, like stated MBA a hard time. That sort of mod pack is better run with higher amounts of ram and a faster processor.
