History: Had a 2011 Mac mini with an SSD system drive and a 2TB second drive for Music and TV libraries. Had issues and decided to upgrade to a M1 Mac mini with a 256GB SSD. Initially tried used the old 2TB drive in a external enclosure but the transfer speeds were very low. So I decided to use 2 x 1TB NVME SSD cards installed in Orico enclosures. Speed was great, roughly 900MB/s both write and read.
Then a problem occurred, one of the drives (the one hosting the TV library) would suddenly disconnect and I would have to unplug it and plug it in again. This happened roughly weekly with no noticeable pattern. So I switched the two NVME cards between enclosures to see if it the enclosure or the card causing the disconnect. The problem stayed with the NVME card. Now the two NVME cards were different makes, the one that never had an issue was a Crucial, the other one was a Samsung 970 EVO. Before ditching the Samsung I decided to try a different enclosure and so bought a Sabrent. Installed the Samsung 970 EVO in it and to date have had no further random disconnections. Happy Days!
Except when I now run Blackmagic Disk Speed on the Sabrent/Samsung combination, I still get 900+ MB/s write speed but the read speed is roughly 1/3 of that at around 300MB/s. This makes no sense to me as clearly the USB interface is still capable of full speed transfers, so why would the read speed be throttled?
Anyone have any ideas?
