Last month I've posted a thread about choosing a M1 machine, and was suggeste to wait till WWDC to see if they announce bigger imacs. They didn't.
I currently do design work and casual video on late 2015 27'' imac. I've decided to go for m1 mac mini, and am now looking at monitor options.
I've recently found screen real estate lacking for design work on the 5k imac. Panels in design software (figma) are somewhat large, and to get enough breathing room to design I keep hiding the UI which gets old quickly. So I was looking at those wide aspect ratio monitors, because in terms of height I am quite satisfied and am lacking mostly the width of the workspace.
However I was puzzled when I saw that in terms of resolution there are very few options that match the 5k imac, which is 2880 px high. I often design for high-px-density displays (like iphones, ipads, macbooks), and working on a high-density display helps me see how the final product will look like.
But in terms of monitors that are available in this resolution I was only able to find LG, which are also 27 inch, and I suspect are same panels as what I have now. Price-wise, I can sell my current imac for around 1000-1200 USD, while 5k LG monitors seem to be around 800-1000 USD where I live. Is it even worth trading it off? Should I just keep the imac and use it in target mode as a monitor with the m1 mini? Is that even possible?
The panel in the imac is great in terms of resolution, decent in terms of color but it's old tech in terms of everything else – I get pixel burnout constantly, where bright pixels get 'imprinted' into the image for long periods of time, which annoys me a little, also viewing angles are not that good. I wonder if the modern LG panels in those 5k monitors are updated tech?
Would appreciate any suggestion in regards to a monitor setup. I like the apple pro display, but 4 grand used is a little too much for me.
