Have a M1 Mac mini with ASUS PB287Q display, connected via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

I don't turn off the mini and usually leave it idle and it will go to sleep.

In the past (more frequently) and now (occasionally), I will be able to wake the mini but tapping on spacebar on my Magic Keyboard.

However, increasingly whenever I try that, the screen will show an Input not detected message on screen and just kept looping.

I know for sure that the mini is turned on, as when I use remote control, I am able to use the mini, just that it doesn't show on the display.

Usually what I will have to do is hold

Option+Command and tap the Eject button twice, and then the display will appear.

But sometimes, it will either not work and I have to force restart, or the resolution will be distorted after display appearing, and I have to restart to get the resolution back to normal.

Anyone face the same issue / able resolve this issue?

My suggestion.

Don't "sleep" the Mini at all.
Just let it sit there "awake, but idling".
On a Mini, the difference in power consumption between "asleep" and "awake, but idling" is next-to-nothing.

Instead, put the DISPLAY to sleep using the screensaver preference pane.
Set up a "hot corner" (I use the upper right).
When you're going to be away from the Mini a while, just push the mouse to the corner, and the screensaver will come on.
You could also set up a password if you wish.

Another way (if you're going to be away for quite a while):
Just reach forward, and TURN OFF the display.
When you return, turn it back on.

how do you prevent it from sleeping?

am confused what's the difference between this sleep and the auto "sleep"?
