My just over 1 year old MacBook Air turned itself off a few weeks ago and I couldn’t get it to reset. Tried everything. I didn’t try it with another charger but there was no sign of life , no chime , no nada. I took it to my local repair guy as there is no apple store where I live. He has told me the motherboard is in perfect condition but the BIOS file is corrupted and needs reprogramming. It’s quite a costly repair and I can’t find anything about it online. Considering the board is in good condition I don’t know whether I should pay up or it’s actually an easy fix. Guy was not up for discussing it when I queried and was patronising which makes me suspicious but I like to do my research and know what I’m paying for. Anyone heard of this malfunction or repair before. Please help!

Thanks !

I think he is telling you a tall tale. Macs don’t have BIOS at all. That’s strictly a PC thing. The closest thing to a full restore would be called a “restore” and you can attempt that yourself with a second Mac for free.

Thanks for this, I got this feeling myself. He said the board needs reprogramming which he uses an expensive device to do and coding. Is this possible? Can you do a revive or restore from a MacBook that won’t turn on? I don’t want to pay him for his time already and take my machine away to be not able to do myself. Prefer to pay him for his repair. But not if it’s just a restore obviously ! If it’s possible I’ll pay him the 50 and run with it

He probably wants to plug it into a second Mac running Configurator and attempt a restore, by following the instructions I linked. You can do that yourself. Borrow a friend’s Mac if you need to.

You still have AppleCare warranty. You couldn't have received your M1 MacBook Air before November 17, 2020 which means you have at least 17 days left on the warranty.
