Hi all,

A projector I use at work doesn't show any image from my M1 MBA, but works perfectly with my 2019 i7 MBP.

Does anyone have any idea or suggestions on how I can get it to work with the M1? I know the USB-C to HDMI dongles and cables I use are fine as they work on the MBP.

For information the M1 detects the projector properly but the projector remains blank and says 'no signal detected.

TIA

We had a weird situation in our active learning classroom at work. For those of us with Macs the hdmi cable used to connect our machines to the instructor display screen behaved exactly as your projector is behaving. I identified the cable that was used to run from the wall to the screen as the issue. When testing the cable and troubleshooting, the cable was fine, but would only work properly if reversed with the right angle end meant for the TV connected to the laptop and the flat end connected to the screen. It was bizarre. IT opted to use the hdmi cable that was run to the instructor station PC because it played nice with Macs and run a new DisplayPort cable through the wall for the instructor station PC.

Talk to your IT. It is very likely a weird quirk with Apple's hdmi implementation, and will only be resolved with new cabling. I doubt a different dongle will do it because the problem persisted across both of my dongles and the IT guy's MBP and dongle.

Apple's hdmi implementation with M* Macs leaves a lot to be desired. I regularly carry 2 dongles with hdmi ports because I never know when I will get handshake issues with one of the projectors at work. Just because a dongle works well with one projector/computer combination is no guarantee that it will work with another. It seems that the simple things that have 'just worked' for decades no longer 'just work.'

I seem to have experienced something similar with my iPad in school, where I am not able to project my iPad Pro to the projector via its HDMI cable. It works with my work laptop (running windows, and incidentally, an intel chip as well). The Apple TV works initially, but similarly fails when I try to mirror my iPad. The image will keep flickering between whatever's shown on my iPad, and no image at all. I have tried different HDMI cables, to no avail as well.

My school's IT dept has no idea what the issue is, and even if they did, I don't expect them to invest any resources in resolving this issue since the iPad is my personal device and they are under no obligation to support it. My iPad has no issues working in all the other rooms, so the problem could be the way the patch panel in that particular room was wired.

Your last resort, and one I might try when I get back to school (term break now) is to try Apple's own official usb-c to HDMI adaptor, if you were not already using them.
