Hi everyone. One of the things I've been watching Reddit and YouTube for was a M1 Max 14" vs 16" comparison. I've yet to see one so I went out and bought a 14" to compare with.

Both models are available in-store; the 14" is equipped with 64GB/2TB and the 16" is the 32GB/1TB version.

One of the most interesting things I've noticed as I have compared the two computers is that the 16" will draw 120-140W at the wall and the 14" will only pull 60-70s from the same 140W charger. If I use the 96W charger from the 14" for the 16", it pulls a constant 90-100W when under load. To be clear, the 14" only goes over low-70s at the wall when it is charging at the same time -- I suppose this is why the default charger is 67W. You only need the bigger adapter on the 14" for the fast charging capabilities, it would seem.

Cinebench tests for both models are essentially the same -- as well as the Geekbench CPU scores. The storage has nearly 2GB/s faster writes on the 14" (2TB) than the 16" (1TB). The reads are roughly the same in my testing with Blackmagic's benchmark.

Now, the GPUs clearly have some pretty different results despite nearly identical Geekbench Compute scores (~69K) but the tests are very short. I spent more time testing using Shadow of the Tomb Raider's benchmark tool (same settings as Tally Ho Tech on YouTube), Unreal's Heaven and Valley benchmark, and general WoW Retail and TBC gameplay (I play both semi-competitively).

Across the board, I see roughly a 15-20% boost in FPS when compared to each other with the same settings (e.g. - SotTR 92 FPS on the 16" vs 79 FPS on the 14"). This is very consistent across the games and benchmarks I tested.

One more thing... I ran the fans at maximum to see if it made a difference over multiple tests -- it wasn't really noticable. The computers do a good job deciding how much fan to use to keep themselves cool.

Right now, I'm leaning toward the 14" because I love the form factor and you really only compromise a bit of GPU power. Additionally, the 14" is drawing roughly half the power the 16" does -- this possibly explains the lower GPU performance, by supplying less power it is basically pre-throttling the GPU. Lastly, the 14" fans have a pleasant sound to me. If the 16" fans are running over 3500 RPM it sounds like a jet engine prepping for take off. ?

Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments. I'll probably update this later next week once I decide if I want to keep the 14" over the 16".

Excellent comparison- thank you for this. I am very much undecided about which unit to go for- the M1 Pro or the M1 Max in the 14" size. I initially got the Max and later "downgraded" to the Pro.

Why did you decide on getting the Max yourself?

I just like the power. I sold from the previous 2019 16" + an eGPU in anticipation of the M1X MBP release back just before the iMac event -- I was super disappointed that it wasn't released then but enjoyed using a M1 MBA for a while to tide me over.

Surprisingly, the M1 MBA and the 2019 16" felt pretty much the same for me in every day use, but I did miss the extra power from the eGPU.

I tried out the M1 Pro and it wasn't a noticable enough upgrade from the M1 for me. I can feel the power difference in the M1 Max though! ?

Thanks for this! Currently have the same 14” with a week left in the return window. Have been seeing so much about worse thermals/battery life compared to the 16 inch, which I’m considering. However, portability of the 14 is something that can’t be denied and I usually dock my Mac while at home. I have yet to hear the fans rev up, but haven’t had the chance to really sit down and push the system yet.

Yeah, most of my daily use is docked. I'd almost never do anything but browse the web, watch video, and email-type tasks when I was using it as a laptop.

But being 3.5lbs and feeling significantly smaller and more portable for when I do travel is kind of a big deal.

Everyone is so different! Got to do what's right for you. ?

Better thermal and battery on 16". If you are going with the max...the issues are amplified for the 14"- much lower battery life and more fans/heat. I have the 14" max and thinking about going to 16" max because of screen, when not docked, thermals and battery life.

I have a 14" Pro and thinking of stepping up to the 14" Max. When no demanding tasks are being performed I will just switch low power mode on.

The 16" model is just way to massive for me...I am sure/hope Apple will be introducing better management of that bigger GPU when it is not needed.

Just a quick follow-up for anyone curious. As more and more 14" 24c results are coming out, what I expected -- that the 14" thermally constrains the 32c -- has been confirmed. Essentially, you usually only lose about 2-3% GPU performance (think 1-2 FPS) by choosing the 24c over the 32c in the 14".

After 2+ weeks of testing, I believe that if you want the 14" then 24c is the way to go. If you want the 32c GPU experience, you should absolutely get a 16".

Despite really wanting to pick the 14" this year, I've decided on the 16" M1 Max 10c/32c/32GB/1TB (stock configuration). It has ~10-20% more GPU performance over the 14" 32c M1 Max, quieter (dBA) fans under load (although the noise profile is more annoying than the 14"), a more epic experience (screen size and speakers) when using it in laptop mode, and I believe the resale appeal of a stock configuration will be better next year when I upgrade.

I also picked Silver this year because the Silver-on-Black just looks *chef's kiss*. ?

What is the battery life of 16" M1 Max 10c/32c/32GB/1TB?
