i just had the weirdest experience: i lost internet connection on my M1 MBP2020. it's connected to an Elgato Thunderbolt 3 dock for ethernet. i tried using the wifi connection instead and it still couldn't access the internet. all of my other computers/devices continued to operate properly.

after trying unplugging the ethernet cable and turning wifi on and off several times, i finally just rebooted the machine and it all came up just fine.

i've never experienced this before, and this dock has been used for the past 4 years with a 2016 MBP13. i've had the M1 on this dock since last Thursday and this is the first time i have had to reboot the machine since then.

has anyone experienced this before? i'm hoping this is a fluke, but this was a really odd occurrence. (i originally thought our ISP or my router was having an issue, but clearly neither of those were the case)

Sounds like a crash somewhere in the network stack.

If it happens repeatedly it is probably an M1 network bug. If it never happens again, it was just one of those things. Maybe a stray cosmic ray or something. The range is also everything in between unfortunately. There can always be rare bugs that never get fixed because they aren't seen often enough.

thanks everyone.

@BrianBaughn , it lost all connectivity to both the internet and even my local network both for ethernet and wifi. i have never had a computer do this before so it was surprising.

i'm hoping it was a one and done situation.

i should say we have another M1 device in the house. my wife's MacBook Air has not done this in the four months we've had it, so i'm hoping this was just a random glitch that won't happen again anytime soon.

FWIW, I *have* had that happen to my non-M1 old MBP, running Big Sur. At the time, I noted that there seemed to be problems with the keychain, as well. Reboot fixed it.

Today I lost partial internet connectivity on a different MBP running Big Sur, and again there were indications that keychain was involved. Rebooting, again, solve it.

I'm experiencing the same problem with a M1 Pro MBP. It seems to happen randomly, sometimes even more than once a day. Networking completely crashes, and the only solution is to reboot. Curiously enough, System Preferences also crashes when attempting to open the Network tab.

I mostly use my MBP in clamshell mode with a TS3+ dock, and so far the problem only happened with this setup. Since Thunderbolt docks have been a mess since day one for M1 Macs (see the numerous threads about sleep/wake problems in clamshell mode), my guess is that this is just another related issue. Very annoying.

I had this issue with my MBP 16 inch on wifi. Apple support thought it was a hardware issue and sent a replacement. But the same thing happened. Interestingly after two weeks, the issue just disappeared itself and I have run into it for months.

My device is a 16-inch M1 MAX. I encountered this problem recently. Under the exclusion of customer service, I found that I used a proxy. In Network - Advanced - Proxy, uncheck and save, you will find that the network has returned to normal; or Deleting the existing wifi and re-creating the wifi solved the problem.
