Ok, I know this has been discussed in other threads too, but I'm a noob to this. I have a new M1 mini. Bought a Samsung T7 for storage, and pardon me for being behind the times, but after reading stuff here, got the Blackmagic app.

Speed of T7 connected directly to Mini with Samsung provided cable is in the 735 range, which sounds about right from what I've read (i.e. not ideal but what do I know). Just got a new OWC hub https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-thunderbolt-hub to get a few more ports. Thought from what I've read that that helps the slow usb-c issues, but the T7 connected to the hub (which is connected to mini with the OWC T4 cable) is in the 530 range. Not sure what is going on here. Connected T7 to mini with OWC T4 cable and back to 735 or so.

I didn't think from everything I've read here that the OWC hub would make things slower, when they're not ideal to begin with? I'm not overly worried about it (enough to ask I guess, but...), the drive is speedy enough for me, and I love the mini, but short of buying thunderbolt drives, am I missing something here? I would be happy if the T7 got the same speed through the hub as it did connected to the mini. If the Samsung cables were the issue, then why would the drive get the same speed as the OWC cable when connected directly?

Just a noob question - maybe I wasted money on a fancy, over-priced OWC hub, not know what I'm doing. Maybe I shouldn't care because I'm not video-editing in 8K or whatever and be happy.

But, if it was just a simple matter of accepting that Apple slacked off, and a few new cheap cables might allow me to use my hub at a sub-par speed of 735 for a T7, I'd like to know. :)

Sry for the book

I bought one of these. You can even install an SSD or 2.5" drive.
Have not hooked it up yet.

Sorry, I don't have an M1 Mini, but FWIW, this is what I get from the T7 on my 2018 Mini (using the included cable). There have been a variety of other posts about slow USB speeds on the M1.

I also have the OWC TB4 Hub linked to in the first post, connected to 3 Thunderblade v4 drives. I notice no slowdown on the external drives at all (connect to an Intel based MBP16). I have read other reports of drives behaving strangely on M1 systems though......

Well I just asked OWC about the hub specifically about Usb-C, and here was Roberts reply...

"The hub to the computer has full Thunderbolt 4 speeds. Any other devices connected to the hub would negotiate speeds with the OS directly."

Ok... that's fair... but the "negotiation" with the OS thru the hub slows it down that much?

Guess I won't bother with the hub until I get some Thunderbolt drives. Kind of a bummer, but it is what it is... :(
