So far, M1 Pro and Max look fantastic and it's really important for GPU history cause NOBODY CANT MAKE IT BUT APPLE. We predicted that 32 core might be mobile 3070's level but we probably need to compare with mobile 3080 cause Apple compared a laptop with a high end GPU which consumes 170W base on their image.
16 cores on the other hand was predicted to be like 5600M but it seems we are wrong. It's 2.5 times faster than 5600M. We might need to expect mobile 3080's performance with 32 cores.
In terms of power consumption and performance, it's truly revolutionary. Mobile RTX 3070 consumes 125W and mobile RTX 3080 consumes more. Well, it looks like M1 Max's 32 core consumes almost 60W instead of 40W but that's still great.
There are few concerns that M1 Pro and Max need to prove such as memory bandwidth and actual performance. Typically, GDDR6 and HBM2e has way faster bandwidth and nobody ever used LPDDR5 for pro GPU. Yes, some people still joking and questioning about the memory bandwidth with Apple Silicon so we really need to wait and see how it performs.
If M1 Pro and Max truly prove that it perform as good as mobile 3070 or higher and consume less than 60W, I can call it revolutionary. The GPU industry always had a problem with a power consumption and they are increasing the power consumption every single generation which is a huge concern. But if Apple proves that GPU can perform better but consume less, it will impact the GPU market. Both AMD and Nvidia cant do that and they will be shocked.
