Hi

wondering if I’ve made the right decision and now questioning myself!

I am upgrading my beloved MBP mid 2012 retina 2.3/16/256 that was second hand in 2013 for £900!

I have ordered a 16” MBP 2021 M1 pro, 16gb and 1tb storage.

The 2012 has mostly paid for itself over the years doing films for museum work/weddings etc. I iMovie and editing in pages and some light photoshop work.

I don’t play games much so a lot of the time it’s for web browsing, music and email.

Is the M1 pro capable enough over the Max? And 16gb enough?

I opted for the 1tb even though I don’t really fill the 256gb as i offload most stuff to external hard disks. I am planning keeping it probably 5 years?

I’m just wondering if this is a big enough upgrade over the 2012?

Tbh I will be sad to see it go it’s been far the best computer I’ve ever owned… I’m still thinking of keeping it! I’ve waited out since 2016 for a new one because of all the problems so I think this is the year!

Cheers guys!

If you were getting by on a 2012 device then I’m gonna go ahead and guess that even the base M1 Pro will blow you away. You’re fine. It is a mega upgrade from a 2012 device.

If anything will hold you back *maybe* it will be only having 16GB of RAM but it probably won’t be an issue. Try some heavy workflows during the first couple of weeks and see if you’re satisfied with the performance (keep an eye on RAM usage in Activity Monitor). If you’re not satisfied, return it and upgrade whatever component you were dissatisfied with.

heck, even the initial m1 machines

The only thing is that you'll have to live with a little less RAM if your 2012 rMBP had a dedicated GPU (and thus dedicated VRAM). The 2012 MBP with the GeForce 650 had an extra GB of VRAM so it'll be 17 GB (combined) versus 16 GB combined in the 2021 model. In Every other regard, the 2021 16" will run circles around the 2012 :)

I have saved up along time so this is a big decision! But I’m sure it’s going to be great!

Every year I have waited firstly through the butterfly keyboard’s then I though last year was it!

then they hit me with Apple silicon so I waited until now, and now they hit me with the notch but I suppose that’s ok as I have forgoten about it on the iPhone.
