It is a little odd

Not available for pickup anywhere in Washington/Oregon that I'm checking right now

Some chargers are also not available or have delayed shipping. I would bet they’ll announce them sometime this month, but I guess we’ll find out soon if it’s next week.

Hm, it says „ships in 5-7“ days for basic 16“ configs. It is odd indeed since no event has been announced. I would be surprised if they release these machines without an event…

It may be possible that Apple adopted the newer USB PD standard that increase 100W output to 240W. Or they can still maintain ~96W but uses GaN tech to make it more compact.

I've noticed that Apple design direction is towards more portable chargers

Nope, the 16-inch has been unavailable for pickup for a few weeks now. Remember a few weeks ago Apple decided to stock additional colors of iMac in their retail stores.

If it were coming soon, Apple wouldn’t be shipping 16-inch stock configs for delivery in 1-2 weeks.

Even the 30W USB-C charger has a 4-6 week delay in shipping. There’s a global shortage of MOSFETs and MLCCs.

Hmmm… Delays for the Intel Mac mini as well, at least up here in Canada for the configurations I checked. M1 Mac mini has normal shipping times.

These Mac’s will ship next year most likely given the current climate.

The M1 Mac’s also had huge shipping times.

The Mac Pro is also saying exactly 2-3 weeks for every single configuration which is a bit weird. Either we're going to get the mother of all events or it's just supply chain issues.

I don’t hope for M1X but M2X.

I didn’t wait for more than a year just to have a M1 with more cores slapped onto it.
But that is how it is gonna happen. You get an slightly upgraded M1 chip with a modified name.
For new chips we will have to wait another couple of months.

Apple will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their first MacBooks on October 21. Would really be special if they released these new ones in that date. Not sure they would do a Thursday event, but it would be super Cool.

Nice, thanks to bringing this to our attention! Indeed, Apple went heavily on symbolism lately, so I could definitely see it.

That’s the second time I’ve seen the PowerBook 100 referenced today, not that I’m complaining. I had one as a kid, and it was great. Years later, people were so anti-trackball for gaming, but with proper skills you can own anyone.

Same here in the NYC Metro, even the high end 5600m that they carry in store is unavailable. I just gave away my 13 pro M1 which I’ve been using since launch day to a new employee and temporarily using a spare 2016 15 inch. The keyboard (replaced in 2019) the chassis popping, the speed (geek benches slower than my iPhone 13 pro)… it’s painful. Ready to buy the second they are available.

I think that they'll be shipping quite soon after launch. You're correct that there were huge shipping times for the M1, but that was a result of high demand. Apple launched the M1 on November 10. I ordered mine for collection from my local Apple store on November 17 and picked it up the same day.

Not a chance. When they they last shadow drop a release for a massive launch. There will be an event and a weeks notice for it I imagine. Perhaps they will announce that event today but it won't just appear.

I would be fantastically happy if I was wrong.

More likely we'll see an event announcement today, or at worst a week from now. Only thing I'd expect to "pop into" the store without notice is a new pair of AirPods. Fingers crossed. Got so much money ready to blow on a new M1X/etc. system.

Supplies will be tight but the Apple Store suggests M1X for late November or early December.

i'd say they're going to make it more compact. with apple silicon being more power efficient than intel-chips i see no reason to increase wattage-limits.
