I recently bought the M2 Mac Mini base model (8gb / 256gb), and the occasional fan noise doesn't bother me, but it also randomly makes a boing noise. I muted the external speaker sound, turned off all notifications, and put it into DoNotDisturb mode. It's still making the boing noise. Does anyone have any idea what that noise could be?

I don't hear any noises from my M2 Mini, it is nearly silent. If you are in the return window, I would return it and buy another one.

The only 'boing' noise I am familiar with from the Mac Mini is when it powers on. Is it the same noise as that or different?

No, it's different than the power on noise. I turned that off as well.

Is it like.. a cartoon boing? Reminiscent of the one in iMovie?
It's not a cartoon boing. It's a more serious (for lack of a better word) boing noise.

I mostly use the mini as a Plex server right now, so it's weird that it's making any noise at all.

Is it coming from the internal speaker or some other internal component? I suppose you confirmed that it’s not one of the various system alert sounds?

You have a smart phone. Make a recording of what it is doing and upload it because someone will probably recognize what it is based on an actual recording vs. your description of it going “boing”.

Yeah, the only "boing" I can imagine is some internal component springing loose or just a cartoonish boing sound.

It could also simply be some forgotten application software making a notification sound.
