Hi all,

I'm currently using an 11" MacBook Air from 2015 with a Core i7 CPU clamshelled with my Dell U2518D monitor.

The monitor is 2560x1440 and things are working well with it and macOS 12.

I am, however, planning on upgrading to a Mac Studio M2. As I understand it, my Dell monitor won't work? I'll need a 4K display for the Studio?

Can anyone confirm this? And if so, are there recommendations for a display for this Mac? Honestly I'm not interested in the display that Apple is selling for $1800; it is over my budget. I do want a display that has good color calibration as I am going to be using Affinity Photo and Final Cut Pro a ton on the Studio.

Thanks!

Your Dell monitor should work just fine with the Mac Studio. The Mac Studio supported display specifications are up to not minimum requirements.

As @Bigwaff said, those arent minimum requirements—you'll be fine running that monitor with your Mac Studio! You can also get more monitors if you feel the need to have more screen real estate or just more displays to move windows to.

Thank you so much for this info! And thank you @rm5 ! I was under the impression a 4K display was required. This will definitely allow me to slowly upgrade my rig so I can add a 4K display later [I do like having multiple displays - recently space has limited me]

Thanks again you two! I owe you!

You should definitely look at 5K displays, as upgrade. It makes a big difference, for a small price increase, especially that you can score used models for low prices. Ideally, you should look at Apple supported devices like LG Ultrafine or Studio Display. The main advantage is the screen instantly opening when you power your Mac, I used to find extremely annoying to wait for my Dell screen to still be black, while I enter my password. I personally did recently a big jump to the 6K Pro Display XDR.
